Bush Cucumber
The most productive crop per pot if you give it something to climb. Three plants in a 5-gallon pot can out-yield a garden row.
- Pot size 5 gallons minimum
- Soil depth 12 inches
- Spacing 18 inches
- Days to harvest 55
Cucumbers are thirsty, hungry, and fast — which makes them a poor match for small pots and a spectacular match for a 5-gallon container with a trellis. Choose a compact or bush variety, not a field slicer, and give it a vertical frame early. The plant will climb on its own tendrils if you lean it toward the support.
How to grow it
- Sow two seeds per station and thin to the stronger plant. Cucumbers hate root disturbance, so direct sowing usually beats transplanting.
- Set up a trellis, fence panel, or string frame at planting time. Cucumbers you move later snap at the base.
- Water daily in hot weather — cucumbers are 96% water and fruit turns bitter when stressed.
- Feed weekly with a balanced liquid fertilizer once flowering starts.
- Mulch the surface to keep roots cool and moisture even.
What goes wrong
- Powdery mildew: white dust on leaves, then dieback. Choose resistant varieties and prune for airflow.
- Bitter fruit: water stress or high heat. Consistent watering is the fix.
- Cucumber beetles: yellow-striped beetles that spread bacterial wilt. Cover early, uncover when flowering.
Harvesting
Pick at 6–8 inches and every day after. One missed cucumber at full size shuts down the whole vine.
- Pick every day during peak season, in the morning.
- Use pruners or a sharp twist — pulling can break the vine.
- Store at room temperature, not the fridge, if you will eat them within two days.
