Carrot
The crop that punishes shallow pots. Give it 12 inches of loose, stone-free mix and short varieties, and it delivers.
- Pot size 3 gallons minimum
- Soil depth 12 inches
- Spacing 3 inches
- Days to harvest 70
Carrots fail in containers for two predictable reasons: the pot is too shallow and the mix is too coarse. Fix both and carrots become one of the most satisfying crops on a balcony, because a fresh-pulled carrot is a genuinely different vegetable from a bagged one. Always direct sow — transplanted carrots fork and twist.
How to grow it
- Use a pot at least 12 inches deep and fill it with fine, stone-free mix — sift out lumps and bark chunks.
- Sow ¼ inch deep, 1 inch apart, then thin to 3 inches. Thinning is what determines carrot size.
- Cover seed with a board or damp cloth until germination to stop the surface drying out.
- Water evenly and deeply. Splitting comes from alternating drought and flood.
- Grow short-root types in containers: 5–7 inch carrots, not 10-inch maincrop types.
What goes wrong
- Forked roots: fresh compost lumps, stones, or transplanting. Use sieved mix and direct sow only.
- Green shoulders: the crown was exposed to light. Hill soil over the top of the root.
- Carrot fly: tiny tunnels and rust-red streaks. A 2-foot mesh barrier around the pot prevents the low-flying fly.
Harvesting
Ready when the shoulder is ¾ inch across — check by lifting the edge of the soil, not by pulling.
- Loosen the mix with a fork before pulling to avoid snapping the root.
- Harvest from 65 days for baby carrots; leave the rest to size up.
- Twist the leaves off before storing so the root does not soften.
