Balcony Harvest

Bush Bean

The best first crop for a new container garden: fast, cheap from seed, fixes its own nitrogen, and needs no staking.

  • Pot size 3 gallons minimum
  • Soil depth 9 inches
  • Spacing 6 inches
  • Days to harvest 55

Beans are the crop that makes a 3-gallon pot look productive. Sow seed directly — beans resent transplanting and indoor starts usually stall for two weeks after going outside. Bush types stay under 2 feet, so a single pot gives you a dense canopy without any support. The one rule that matters: do not work around wet bean plants, because that is how you spread disease.

How to grow it

  • Sow seed 1 inch deep, 4–6 inches apart, only after soil is above 60°F. Cold soil rots bean seed.
  • Inoculate seed with a bean/pea inoculant if you can. It costs a few dollars and visibly improves vigor in poor soil.
  • Water at the base, never overhead, and water in the morning so leaves dry before night.
  • Do not add nitrogen fertilizer. Beans fix their own and extra nitrogen gives you leaves instead of pods.
  • Sow a second pot three weeks after the first for a continuous supply instead of one giant glut.

What goes wrong

  • Japanese beetles: skeletonized leaves in midsummer. Hand-pick into soapy water in the morning when they are sluggish.
  • Root rot in cool wet soil: seed simply never emerges. Wait for warmth rather than overwatering.
  • Powdery mildew on crowded plants: increase airflow and remove the worst leaves.

Harvesting

Pick pods when they are pencil-thick and snap cleanly. Waiting for lumps means tough, stringy beans.

  • Harvest every two to three days. Oversized pods stop the plant from setting new flowers.
  • Pick with two hands — hold the stem and pull the pod, or you will uproot the plant.
  • Leave pods on the plant to dry if you want shelling beans for winter soups.
